When I taught first grade, I'd teach my children to write using the Small Moments or Watermelon Seeds approach. I told them that no one was interested in hearing about their whole day...stories do not need to begin with waking up and end with going to bed. I told them to pick one small moment, the size of a watermelon seed, and then tell me in detail about that moment.
Well, here's a few watermelon seeds that I've experienced in motherhood this week. Except I'm not going to go into detail about each one because I'm fairly certain you don't want to know the "details" of them...one in particular.
Words I never thought I'd utter, "Why is there a slice of ham on my magazine?"
Stepping barefoot on a wooden block in the dark and having to silently scream S*#! instead of loudly screaming S*#! so I wouldn't wake the family and scare the bejezzus out of them.
Realizing that my floor is a buffet of snacks for my children...puffs, crackers, a lone gummi snack, and trix cereal.
Waking up at 3am to fix the Bug a cup of milk. We're still not consistently sleeping through the night. (I say we're because as long as she's not, I'm not).
And I saved the best for last.
Walking into the living room with my bowl of oatmeal this morning to find my daughter sans diaper playing in her poo. Gag me with a spoon! It was very hard to eat my breakfast after that.
What are your watermelon seed moments, motherhood or otherwise?
